Gorillaz is an experimental music group, but their approach is very artistic, cohesive and to-the-point. Their lyrics are very friendly and easy to understand. They’re easily switch-up their direction from the uninspired Dance pop slop into an unexpected banger of the decade, which is blending a lot of their works from the modern Electropop tunes with the spirit of Plastic Beach’s Art Pop-ish and Arabic / Hindustani World.
The intro and title track is orchestral intro with Hindustani-esque classical instrumental that starts very hitting and building up beautifully. The Moon Cave is an very jammy Post-Rap song that blends almost all instruments possible with their signature bass and kicks, heavy chorus vocal and great rap performance. The Happy Dictator is catchy, uplifting, the pianos are really add the atmosphere and depth so much. But very deep. “No more bad news” is what everybody wants for life, yet never achieved. There’s always the down and up of life, don’t trust anyone who always smiles.
The Hardest Thing / Orange County meaning is straightforward, but easily grab all the heart. From the melancholic interlude with an simple line that wrapping the both songs “You know the hardest thing, Is to say goodbye to someone you love” can be whatever it is, just imagine someone you love is passed away, gone, or left the hometown, it’s very hard to say an simple “Goodbye”. The God of Lying is simply the least appealing song, “Oh, don’t you say, That you think that I’m in glory” you were ask something that looks a lie, you don’t know if it’s real because it’s not happen.
The Empty Dream Machine is dreamy and heavy, “The feeling of the day before
Was really much more than anyone could pray for” the day before your loved one still alive, which is what you’re hoped the most right now, “Empty dream machine without you” you achieved the dreams that what you want, but you doesn’t really mean, the vibe is just very down and just on. The Manifesto is nonetheless an fun song, very flavorful instruments and rapping. The beat switch is helping a lot into the second half of the album which is more downlifting.
The Plastic Guru is my personal standout, the electronic highkeys are very sentimental and uplifting with an jammy synths. “We believe what we choose, Is that not the truth?” It’s essentially about freedom, sometimes what do we choose is not the best, or we’re not already having the power of choosing. Bribery in elections, insider power, or mistakes we regret that in fact we choose not the best. Delirium is straight up gas, an very epic development from the Glitter Freeze, full of energy and riots, the beat drop is great. “Delirium! delirium!” ⇒ an temporary decrease in consciousness and cognitive abilities that usually occurs suddenly. Like, nobody knows when does this happens, the effects is sudden, that’s the god power.
The Shadowy Light leans more toward Hindustani musically, The whole of verse 2 with chorus is essentially about an fake truth of God that can be easily created with machines, like AI. They’re “Oblivious to the truth, Of the shadowy light”. The uplifting synths lowkey reminds me with LG’s 2013 Life Good music (idk why I mentioned it, but very fitting :P). Casablanca is an love ballad, that also the most Plastic Beach vibe song for me, the reverbating ocean-like synths are really dreamy that like an reversed element from Empire Ants, and then an very uplifting orchestrated synths in the end.
“Sweet prince, don’t be sad, You were never meant to be here, Your patterned path into the next life”. God knows the best, we can’t do anything above dead. Based on indian cultures: “Death is not the end, only a step into another life”. The Sad God is an bittersweet ending, though it’s very uplifting, full of happiness with electronic sweet highkeys. God gives us everything, yet we are not so grateful, we are not so praying, and we are distracted by screens. God are disappointed by it’s creation. Idk how to say it, but the synths was back into the title track orchestra, which is very much like No Questions Asked/Casper.
This is simply one of the albums of this decade, from the genre blending into tribute by posthumous features. My hype is immeasurable just like The Weeknd’s Hurry Up Tomorrow. I waiting since September 2024 and it’s didn’t disappointed. However, I wasn’t even an music fanatic, I just listening to it casual. I don’t know to describe what’s going on with the visuals of the music. And I kind of very happy I joined this for some reason, it’s very that easy to get into music. I’m no longer just listening to brand ringtones (Well, I do! :P). I finding my hobby and something I like. It’s pride. It’s really great experience. And I now, gets an 100 followers, which is more than I could do. I just happy. i will be learn more about the art of writing reviews like this, it’s very fun!
